My obsession with forged, multi-purpose tools continues. The bomb-proof Triple Threat with its ability to cut, dig and pound is a utilitarian gift for the bushcrafter. I wanted to design an eclectic sub-one-pound tool for cutting and digging, with the mobile minimalist in mind. Forged In Fire champion blacksmith Scott Sweder, maker of the DeEvolution Yupik bushcrafting knife, made my first prototypes in the Fall of 2021. Shortly after, the “Light Hawk” accompanied me on a three-day solo mountain trip. It flawlessly performed shelter building, limbing, firewood splitting, FATWOOD processing, leveling of ground, prying up rocks from the frozen soil, and digging fire pits.
The Light Hawk head is forged from the venerable 4140 steel and compression fits an 18 inch hickory handle, available in either natural or burnt colors. Head and handle weighs just 15 ounces. It comes with a custom leather belt sheath, also individually made by Mr. Sweder. Each head is individually numbered in the order of its production and each Light Hawk comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
As detailed in the Triple Threat narrative, my passions for the Pulaski style axe date back to early childhood. Seeing the vision of this heirloom quality, ultra-lightweight version progress into the durable Light Hawk has been deeply satisfying. It is my hope that a similar satisfaction, one stemming from capability, will be yours to experience when wielding this fine tool.
